Want some answers? Here are our most frequently asked questions about our belly dance classes.
Do I have to sign a contract?
Yes, all students must complete our enrolment form. In order for a student-studio relationship to thrive there must be clarity around what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you. This form also includes an indemnity waiver, important enrolment information that is needed for our system, as well as our terms and conditions. We require a calendar months’ notice if you wish to reduce your classes or stop dancing for any reason.
Why do i pay a registration fee?
For all students this annual fee reserves your spot in class, confirms your interest and is utilised towards the general running of the studio and the associated administration.
why do I have to pay a deposit?
Your deposit secures your place and ensures the studio is able to manage it’s cash flow effectively. The deposit is paid on signup and should you decide to leave at any stage, the deposit is utilised for the last month’s fees. Should fees be paid late the deposit will be used for fees and will need to be repaid. The deposit may also be used should a student not return to class or not notify the teachers that they will be absent for a period of time, in other words a no show.
how do i enroll?
can i try a class first?
I can't commit to a regular class. Can I still dance with you?
Yes you can! Our timetable and class offerings are designed to suit a variety of schedules. If you struggle to attend a weekly class you are welcome to drop in to one of our Open-Level classes or our monthly Tech Skillz class (provided you have completed our Foundation Level or equivalent). A per class drop in rate will be charged and we ask that you let us know in advance if you plan to come to class so that we know to expect you.
what must i wear to class?
Stretchy comfortable workout or gym style clothes are ideal. No loose-fitted shirts. Wear leggings or soft pants - no skirts - this is so we can check posture, feet and leg positioning and alignment. A coin belt is great for jingles - the noise helps you learn, (we have these on sale too so don’t stress if you don’t have one yet) and of course as much bling as you like! We dance barefoot or we wear socks in winter. You may also wear flat dance shoes.
how long will it take me to perform?
Everyone advances at their own rate but it can take years of continuous training to become a professional belly dancer. For this reason we provide loads of performance opportunities for our students through community events, showcases, charity fundraisers and haflas. We know how awesome it is to get into costume and dance and we want our students to experience that as much as possible.
what gear do i need and where can i get it?
To start off, you will need a coin belt for Bellydance and a hip scarf if you're doing Tribal. You will need your own props for Prop Skillz and class choreographies from Intermediate Level upwards. If you perform in our showcases or community events you will need a costume. Our Pandora's Box store has new and pre-loved belly dance wear, props, jewellery and trinkets which are available to purchase. Alternatively, your teacher can advise the best places to purchase a professional costume or have a custom costume designed.
how do i get promoted?
There are a number of ways to be promoted but it's important to note that everyone improves at their own pace, in their own way, factoring in a variety of circumstances.
1. Completing our Foundation Level promotes you to Core-Level Beginner.
2. Promotion from Intermediate to Advanced is based on an assessment by our Instructors.
3. Promotion to our Troupe class is invitation only and subject to an audition.
what must i do to progress as quickly as possible?
1. Come to class consistently.
2. Attend additional classes if possible.
3. Practice at home.
4. Participate in studio events.
5. Maintain a positive attitude and a hunger to learn.
If you are planning on moving up a level speak to one of our teachers who will give you the criteria to work towards. A Feedback Session can be arranged to discuss your personal progress.
what if i miss a class?
No problem. You can make up a class by attending another class of a similar level or one of our Open-Level classes within 30 days of the missed class. Missed classes are not held as credits and it is your obligation as a student to catch up as quickly as possible.
AM I TOO OLD TO BELLY DANCE?
Nope! That's enough of that talk now... You're never too old to try new things.
CAN MY DAUGHTER COME WITH ME TO CLASS?
Yes! As long as she is 12 or over. We don't offer kids belly dance classes at the moment.
